Using Pinmist
Routes mode
Move your location along a road route at walking, cycling or driving speed.
Routes mode moves your iPhone's location along a route, second by second, as if you were making the journey.
Set up a route
Choose Routes in the switch at the top of the map.
- Start and end. Select the Start field, then click the map or search for a place. Do the same for End. A blue marker shows the start and a pin shows the end.
- Waypoints. Press Add waypoint for a stop along the way. You can add up to 10. Drag a waypoint's handle to reorder it, or remove it with its button. Whichever field is selected, your next click on the map fills it.
- Travel mode. Choose Walking, Cycling or Driving.
Travel modes and speeds
| Mode | Default speed |
|---|---|
| Walking | 5 km/h |
| Cycling | 15 km/h |
| Driving | 45 km/h |
You can change the speeds in Settings, in km/h or mph. Speed variation adds a small random drift of up to 10% so the movement looks less mechanical. It is on by default.
Preview the route
Press Preview route. Pinmist asks a routing service for a route along roads and paths, draws it on the map, and shows its distance and how long it will take.
There is a cooldown of about three seconds between previews, counted down on the button. The routing services are shared, and the pause keeps them available for everyone.
If no route can be found, check that the start and end are on or near a road. In Settings you can switch to another routing service, or travel in a straight line instead.
Start, pause and stop
- Start route becomes available once you have a preview. Your iPhone starts moving along the route in real time.
- A progress bar shows the distance covered, the total distance and the time left, and a dot moves along the route on the map.
- Pause holds your location where it is. Resume carries on from there.
- Stop and reset location ends the route and brings your real location back.
You cannot switch to Static mode while a route is running. Stop it first.
At the end of the route
Tick Stay at end before you start if you want your location to stay at the destination when the route finishes. Leave it unticked and your real location comes back at the end.
Note. Routes move the reported location only. The iPhone's motion sensors still report that it is not moving, so fitness trackers and drive detection will not count the journey.
